Erase My Name

Exodus 32:30-34

The next day Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold. But now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written.” But the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book. But now go, lead the people to the place about which I have spoken to you; behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them.”

He who leads and no one follows… is only taking a walk.

It is discouraging to help someone and find they have returned to the same situation you just pulled them through. Many times, I have guided someone to get help for an addiction to which they eventually returned. It hurts your heart to see the consequences: losing health, a family, or even a life.

Paul’s heart hurt for the Romans in their disbelief. Moses heart hurt for the Jews returning to idol worship. My heart hurt for family going through physical and mental crisis.

Many times, it seems we are the only ones who see the train coming and we can’t get anyone off of the tracks. So, what do we do? Kneel in prayer! Stand in truth! Walk in love!

This is Heavy

Romans 9:1-3

I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh.”

Just before my son entered into his teens, he became very sick and we found he had become a type 1 diabetic. Through those hospital days and training at Scottish Rite, I wish I could take his place. When my wife found she had breast cancer about seventeen years ago, I bargained with God – why couldn’t it be me? Over the next five years, thirteen surgeries, and over one hundred procedures my heart wanted to change places instead of Treva suffering through this journey.

Likewise, Paul wrote to the romans about the coming suffering caused by their disbelief and disobedience. His heart hurt for his people. We become followers of Christ on an individual level, not by groups or families. Faith is not inherited from your parents, it is not innately given to you by walking through the doors of a church, and it is not automatically dispensed because of your good deeds. You must trust in a one-on-one relationship in Jesus because of what He has done on the cross for me and you. Just because you were born in a garage, doesn’t make you a Ford. Others will share with you, mentor you, teach you, and guide you – but you must be the one to pray and admit that Jesus is Lord, believe that Jesus died for you, and confess you are a sinner. No one can do it for you!

Small Group Discussion

We’ve been reading this week about how God is for us.

Discuss with your small group what you’ve drawn from your reading this week and how God has spoken to you.

The HEAR method is also an excellent structure for your discussion as a group. If you aren’t currently in a group we’d love to help you connect with one. Contact sharon@mybelmont.org or go to mybelmont.org/smallgroups

More Than Conquerers

Romans 8:37-39

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Inseparable Love

Romans 8:35-36

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.'”
