Released From The Law – Part One

Romans 7:1-3

Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.”

People from all over the world continue to debate law versus grace. The Romans were also debating this issue 2,000 years ago. Paul breaks down the authority of the law in these verses. He also continues this thought further in chapter seven.

Paul is making clear that sin must be dead in our lives so we can live a righteous life. Paul makes a comparison between a married woman and her husband to the law. If her husband has passed away, then she is free to marry another. However, if her husband is still alive then she’s living in sin if she is with another man.

The same is true in our spiritual lives with Jesus Christ. Sin must be dead in our lives, so we have the ability to live in righteousness. Being free from sin allows us to be free from law. If we are still actively pursuing sin then we are not able to pursue righteousness. Sin must die then we are able to move forward through the power of the Holy Spirit. As followers of Jesus, we can be part of growing God’s kingdom. We are able to bring God glory.

Small Group Discussion

We’ve been reading this week about how we are dead to sin and alive in Christ.

Discuss with your small group what you’ve drawn from your reading this week and how God has spoken to you. You can also pull from the questions in each day’s reading.

The HEAR method is also an excellent structure for your discussion as a group. If you aren’t currently in a group we’d love to help you connect with one. Contact sharon@mybelmont.org or go to mybelmont.org/smallgroups

The Fruit of Righteousness

Romans 6:20-23

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Who you Obey is Who you Serve

Romans 6:15-19

What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.”

Take Sin off the Throne

Romans 6:12-14

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”
