Bad Breath and Dirty Feet

Romans 3:9-18

What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.’ ‘Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.’ ‘The venom of asps is under their lips.’ ‘Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.’ ‘Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.’ ‘There is no fear God before their eyes.”

In 1865, Johnson Oatman, a New. Jersey minister, wrote the hymn “No, Not one.” The first verse and chorus read, “There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus. No, not one! No, not one! None else could heal al our soul’s diseases. No, not one! No, not one! Jesus knows all about our struggles; He will guide til day is done. There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus.  No, not one! No, not one!

What if we took this Roman’s passage and wrote a new verse to this hymn? “There’s no one righteous, we do not seek God. No, not one! No, not one! No understanding and no one does good. No, not one! No, not one! Our bitterness fills our mouth with curses. Our paths are ruin, full of misery. There is no fear our eyes before Him. No, not one! No, not one!”

If we could see our sin in the eyes of a Holy God, we would better understand the glorious miracle of His grace and salvation.

Small Group Discussion

We’ve been reading this week about what it means to be righteous.

Discuss with your small group what you’ve drawn from your reading this week and how God has spoken to you. You can also pull from the questions in each day’s reading.

The HEAR method is also an excellent structure for your discussion as a group. If you aren’t currently in a group we’d love to help you connect with one. Contact sharon@mybelmont.org or go to mybelmont.org/smallgroups

Righteousness Comes Through Faith

Philippians 3:9

and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”

I Need Forgiveness

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

While using the HEAR method (see below) consider the following questions:
  • Why is confession vital when it comes to your relationship with the Lord?
  • What are some things you need to be cleansed of?
  • Have you ever found yourself trying to take advantage of God’s forgiveness and grace?

I Got Questions

Romans 3:1-8

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.” But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? But if through my lie God’s truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.”
