What Not to Pack

Rev. 21:22-27

“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

I’m an over-packer. Whenever I have a trip coming up, as I pull things aside for the trip, I tend to consider every eventuality.

  • What if it rains? (in go the poncho and waterproof boots)
  • What if there’s a pool? (in go the goggles and swimsuit)
  • What if I get the chance to cook? (in go my favorite knife and spices)
  • What if we go out to a fancy restaurant? (in go some dress clothes)
  • What if there’s an impromptu soccer game? (in go the cleats and shin guards)

I wish I were kidding, but most of the time, when I get to my location many of my items never make it out of the bag. I simply don’t need them.

As the apostle John took his pre-trip viewing of the New Jerusalem, he noticed right off some surprising items that were missing – no temple, no sun, and no moon. Although these elements were central to life as he currently knew it, they didn’t need to make the trip – the presence and glory of the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb would take their place. The brilliance and purity of God and Christ would not only dispel any hint of darkness but would provide peace and direction and safety, and keep out any sin, danger, corruption, and evil.

As we prepare for our future home, there will be no need to pack based on lack. Everything we need will be waiting for us!

While using the HEAR method (see below) consider the following questions:
  • Based on today’s passage, what are some other things we can expect not to see when we go to our eternal home?
  • How does this bring you peace or joy based on your own circumstances?

No More

Revelation 21:1-5

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

Are we there yet? How much longer?

When my children were young and in the car for a long ride to the grandparents, they would frequently ask how much longer before we would arrive. I would often hold my fingers apart a few inches and say, “this much farther on the map.”

That worked when they were small. Today the family has access to mobile phones that can tell them the number of miles and the time of arrival with just the push of a few buttons. Some journeys are long and some quite short, but there is always preparation to reach our destination.

As a child I remember the trips to see my sister and her family at USL in Lafayette Louisiana. We would travel Hwy 190 before I-20 was built. It led through the swamps and back roads of my home state. The only glimmering stop along the way was a Stuckey’s with fudge, fuel, fudge, drinks, fudge, bathrooms, fudge, cheap souvenirs, fudge, and a chance to get out of the car – and eat fudge. Miles before we reached this glorious destination, there were small signs along the way – 30 miles to clean restrooms – 25 miles for hamburgers – 20 miles for fuel – 15 miles for fudge – 10 miles for fudge – 5 miles for fudge. The anticipation was incredible! Luckily my parents knew the border line between filling my sweet tooth and stomach disaster.

We are on a spiritual journey to a heavenly home. You make preparations to travel there through a relationship with Christ. Be sure to read the signs along the way. “Just up ahead, no more tears,” “Coming soon, no more death,” “A little while longer, no mourning, crying or pain.” The anticipation is incredible!

Don Wyrtzen penned these words for our consideration in his song “Finally Home.”

“Just think of stepping on shore, and finding it heaven
Of touching a hand, and finding it God’s
Of breathing new air, and finding it celestial
Of waking up in Glory, and finding it “Home!”

A Kingdom With Reward

Revelation 20:4-6

Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.”

A Wedding and A War

Revelation 19:11-21

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.”And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.”
