Who’s Your Builder?

Hebrews 3:1-6

“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”

If you’ve ever had the joy of selling a home, you know it can be a real process. There are so many variables to consider when setting a sale price. You have to factor in the market trends, the location and even look at comparable homes in the area. Whether you’re selling your home or just living in it, one of the most important ingredients to the quality of a home is the builder. Did he or she go the extra mile to make sure the home was built with care and quality? Did they do the bare minimum and cut corners where they thought no one would notice or did they fill the home with upgrades and custom work that would bring joy and pride to the owners?

Who is building your life? Are you a DIYer – reading self-help books, listening to your heart and going it alone based on what feels right? Are you covering over areas of pain and brokenness with a little smile and bluster, hoping no one steps wrong and notices the structural weaknesses?

Or are you relying on the master builder? Are you willing to invest what you have to attain far more than you can afford? Every house is built by someone. And though you might not always be able to see the differences from the curb compared to someone who is faking it, it is worth handing over what you have to the one who really knows what to do with it. Christ is faithful to build in us more than we could ever do on our own. And when we are faithful to rely on Him and act in obedience to His plans we will not only end up with security, shelter and comfort but we can open up and make it available to others as well.

Jesus is Better

Hebrews 1:1-4

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.  He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

Hebrews is a straight forward look at Jesus vs. everything else God created. JESUS IS BETTER!

Check out this video overview of Hebrews by Bible Project.

Small Group Discussion

We’ve been reading this week about forgiveness.

Discuss with your small group what you’ve drawn from your reading this week and how God has spoken to you. You can also pull from the questions in each day’s reading.

The HEAR method is also an excellent structure for your discussion as a group. If you aren’t currently in a group we’d love to help you connect with one. Contact sharon@mybelmont.org or go to mybelmont.org/smallgroups

Is Forgiveness Possible?

Philippians 1:8-22

“For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.

Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell.”

Have you ever had anyone…

  • lie about you
  • put words in your mouth
  • take apart years of work by their “progress”
  • hate you – because
  • put you in the worst light possible
  • ridicule your every move
  • stir up trouble around you
  • rejoice in your failure
  • point out everything negative about you
  • be the voice of non-support
  • and have the ministry of ridicule?

Would you like a list of names? We all have difficult individuals who intersect our lives. We could pen up the hard feelings, animosity, anger, rage and get an ulcer, or we can forgive! Here is the gold standard – “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this – while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) Even in the model prayer, we have the counsel, “and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

In 1976, Contemporary Christian Artist, Larry Norman, recorded “Shot Down” on his album “In Another Land.” If you like classic rock, you may want to find his music. The first lines of the song are,

“I’ve been shot down, talked about
Some people scandalize my name
But here I am, talkin’ ’bout Jesus just the same

I’ve been knocked down, kicked around
But like a moth drawn to the flame
Here I am, talkin’ ’bout Jesus just the same”

Here is a demanding, long-range, humbling challenge for you. Pick a difficult person in your life and be Jesus to them. Minister to their needs, ask about theirs struggles, pray for them, and steer your ship around them to focus on the ministry God has given you.
My mentor, Derric Johnson says, “Bitterness demands that you live in the past. Forgiveness allows you to change your future.”

While using the HEAR method (see below) consider the following questions:
  • Do you have a critical person in your life that matches the description above?
  • How have you responded to their hurtful words and actions?
  • In what ways does today’s reading challenge you to respond differently?
