It Was Here When I Got Here

Romans 5:12-14

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.”

Sin is sin! The comedian Flip Wilson had a gag line: “The Devil made me do it!” We have a tendency to focus more on what caused us to sin and less on that we have committed sin. The book of Romans places a magnifying glass on us as sinners and we want to divert that scrutiny to something or someone else. If “X” wouldn’t have happened,  then I wouldn’t have done “Y.” As we study God’s Word, and learn God’s heart, we discover truths along the way that reveal. sin. When you learn a new truth, we say one of two things… either “AMEN or “OUCH.” Truth is not new, it’s discovered! As we learn God’s ways, we understand the need for our repentance and the power of HIs healing, forgiveness, grace, and faithfulness.

It doesn’t matter where we place the blame. It matters where we place our faith.

Use the HEAR method as you spend time with today’s scripture.

Apply – how does the passage intersect with your life today?
Respond – how is God leading you to respond?
