Simple Gifts

Romans 5:15-17

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.”

Through the offence of one – sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought condemnation; Christ gift brought justification. Just-if-I’d never sinned. When we confess our sin, Jesus’s blood covers our sin, so when we are viewed in the prism of condemnation, the blood cleanses, covers, conceals, just-if-I’d never sinned. That is mind blowing; where we are and what God has done to reach us. We can’t help ourselves – we need a Savior!

As a teen, I took the Red Cross classes to become a lifeguard. They emphasized how someone in trouble could not help themselves and how to approach such a need. I understood this well. Before my teen years, I was afraid of the water. Fear gripped my soul and deep water was gonna get me. We are in deep sin, way over our head, and need a heavenly lifeguard to bring salvation.

I did work as a lifeguard for a summer Louisiana Baptist Children’s Music Camp. I was looking at the shallow end of the pool when I heard the diving board and a blood-curdling scream. I immediately leapt into the air in that direction and before I hit the water heard “THERE’S A FROG IN THE POOL!” First and last time I worked as a Lifeguard.
