Simple Gifts

Romans 5:15-17

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.”

Through the offence of one – sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought condemnation; Christ gift brought justification. Just-if-I’d never sinned. When we confess our sin, Jesus’s blood covers our sin, so when we are viewed in the prism of condemnation, the blood cleanses, covers, conceals, just-if-I’d never sinned. That is mind blowing; where we are and what God has done to reach us. We can’t help ourselves – we need a Savior!

As a teen, I took the Red Cross classes to become a lifeguard. They emphasized how someone in trouble could not help themselves and how to approach such a need. I understood this well. Before my teen years, I was afraid of the water. Fear gripped my soul and deep water was gonna get me. We are in deep sin, way over our head, and need a heavenly lifeguard to bring salvation.

I did work as a lifeguard for a summer Louisiana Baptist Children’s Music Camp. I was looking at the shallow end of the pool when I heard the diving board and a blood-curdling scream. I immediately leapt into the air in that direction and before I hit the water heard “THERE’S A FROG IN THE POOL!” First and last time I worked as a Lifeguard.

Bad Choice

Genesis 3:17-19

And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

A child came home from Sunday School and engaged mom in a discussion bout “we come from dust and return to dust”. Mom tried to calm their heart, thinking that a recent death of an uncle was weighing on the child’s heart. After a few moments the perplexed youth stopped mom and said: “I just want you to check under my bed, because someone is commin’ or goin’.”

James 4:14 tells us that life is like a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. During that vapor – much happens – choices, consequences, relationships, work, play, and surprises. Moments drag by while years speed away. Sin makes life difficult, A relationship with Jesus makes the journey abundant.

Hellen Keller said, “The struggle of life is one of our greatest blessings. It makes us patient, sensitive, and Godlike. It teaches us that, although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”

We often hear, “Life is short… better enjoy it.” How about, “Eternity is long… better prepare for it.”?

It Was Here When I Got Here

Romans 5:12-14

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.”

Sin is sin! The comedian Flip Wilson had a gag line: “The Devil made me do it!” We have a tendency to focus more on what caused us to sin and less on that we have committed sin. The book of Romans places a magnifying glass on us as sinners and we want to divert that scrutiny to something or someone else. If “X” wouldn’t have happened,  then I wouldn’t have done “Y.” As we study God’s Word, and learn God’s heart, we discover truths along the way that reveal. sin. When you learn a new truth, we say one of two things… either “AMEN or “OUCH.” Truth is not new, it’s discovered! As we learn God’s ways, we understand the need for our repentance and the power of HIs healing, forgiveness, grace, and faithfulness.

It doesn’t matter where we place the blame. It matters where we place our faith.

Small Group Discussion

We’ve been reading this week about being justified by the blood of Christ and reconciled with God.

Discuss with your small group what you’ve drawn from your reading this week and how God has spoken to you. You can also pull from the questions in each day’s reading.

The HEAR method is also an excellent structure for your discussion as a group. If you aren’t currently in a group we’d love to help you connect with one. Contact sharon@mybelmont.org or go to mybelmont.org/smallgroups
